The Freedom Series was developed to explore larger scale pieces which were textured while hot, this was a reaction against the pieces that had previously incorporated hours of cold-working process.
The marks in these works are made by squashing the hot glass onto a bed of 6″ nails. This seemingly uninhibited approach has imbued the work with a tangible enjoyment but still speaks of incredible skill.
One has to be able to read and work ‘with’ the material with spontaneity of decision and thought in order to execute these pieces. And like other designs some are rejected when they come out of the kiln as the asymmetric composition of form and surfaces do not work in the intended way.
The colours need to work both together and against each other, encouraging the distortion of the glass both optically and in form.
